NORTH EAST, MD. - A CSX freight train bound from Richmond, Va., to Philadelphia, Pa. derailed 34 of its 58 cars at 12:15 p.m. Saturday February 7, 2004, on the Philadelphia Subdivision of the Baltimore Division, according to CSX spokesman Bob Sullivan. Thirteen of the derailed cars were tankcars, two of which leaked a total of 250 gallons of phosphoric acid, which was quickly contained. More than 50 townspeople were evacuated from the immediate area as a precaution for about two hours.

ARGONIA, KS. – A Burlington Northern Santa Fe intermodal train bound from Chicago, Ill. to Hobart Yard in Los Angeles, derailed eight of its 35 cars about 1:50 p.m. Sunday May 23, 2004, while on the Panhandle Subdivision of the Kansas Division, according to railroad spokesman Steve Forsberg. There were no injuries, however two of the cars were carrying hazardous materials – one with ammonia chloride and another with phosphoric acid – and a hazmat crew was called to the scene.
